Summer holiday fun at CITC 1 Sep, 2022

CITC’s Multi-Activity Sports Camp, which ran during the summer holidays, proved a great success for all involved.

Funded by the Department of Education’s Holiday Activity and Food Programme, and managed in Surrey by Club4 (part of Active Surrey), CITC’s camp ran from 1-25th August, Monday to Thursday 10am-3pm and was specifically aimed at children eligible for free school meals.

With 20 spaces available daily, we were able to deliver a fun activity programme to children from 51 individual families. Every day there was a mix of sport and enrichment activities on offer. Naturally, there was plenty of football but spikeball, hockey and volleyball also became firm favourites.

Enrichment activities provided an opportunity to learn new things and develop skills, including making mosaics and tie-dying. We were even able to provide materials for children to take home if they were keen to continue a particular craft. As part of our funding agreement, healthy eating had to be integrated into the daily programme, so lunch always included a food-related activity such as making delicious smoothies.

Challenge Hour was always hotly anticipated. Activities included an Escape Room game, a scavenger hunt and an emoji quiz. Group games held at the end of each day were a real highlight – everyone looked forward to, and fully participated in, games such as Ultimate Frisbee, Capture the Flag, water fights and football matches.

Alongside providing every child with a healthy meal at lunchtime, we also gave food hampers to participating families. From food cupboard essentials to Tesco vouchers and school stationery supplies, we were able to give a little extra support to those families. We also organised a fun day so that parents could join in. We filled the grounds of Woking College with lawn games, gladiator joust and a bouncy castle, and the heatwave meant the ice cream van was kept busy!

Feedback was very positive. One parent said: “My daughter has struggled in the past with holiday clubs but loved this one and has asked to go again.” And another commented: “My children loved attending the holiday camp. They always came home with a smile and loved telling me about all the activities they did. It was lovely that it was always the same faces that greeted them. They created a fantastic, fun, safe and dynamic experience for my children. Thank you to all of you!”
