Mental Health League

Whilst general understanding of mental health issues has improved over the years, attitudes can be challenging to change. Those who have mental health problems continue to find it harder to find work, make friends and live a ‘normal’ life, which can lead to a sense of isolation. Denied opportunities and faced with barriers that prevent individuals playing an active role in their communities, mental health issues can also impact on physical health.

Set up in 2011 by Woking Football in the Community in conjunction with Surrey County Council, and now run by CITC, the Surrey Community Football League is fully inclusive. Not only open to those who want to play football, there is also a place for those who are keen to become part of a team in different ways eg as a physio or team secretary.

Matches are arranged on a monthly basis, alongside other events and courses that cover topics such as nutrition, teamwork and motivation. As well as running the league, the Wellbeing Tournament is an annual event and a highlight on the calendar. Held at Woking FC’s Laithwaite Stadium, teams play on a professional pitch and spectators have a great day out.

The Surrey Community Football League is mixed gender, so is truly open to all.
